May is Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Categories:

The month of May is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and the San Miguel Resource Center has a series of events to commemorate this month to educate our community and fight stigmas around sexual assault.

The San Miguel Resource Center's (SMRC) mission is to eliminate domestic violence and sexual assault in our community through intervention services, prevention education and social change.

The month unofficially kicks off on Wednesday, April 29 with Denim Day. The campaign began after a 1999 ruling by the Italian Supreme Court where a rape conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans she must have helped the person who raped her remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. People wear denim this day to show visible support to survivors.

Post a picture of yourself wearing denim on April 29 and tag @sanmiguelresourcecenter on Instagram to show your support of SMRC.

On Wednesday, May 6, at 7 p.m., SMRC will host Virtual Sex Pub Trivia on Facebook live with Mishky.

May 11-15 will be Podcast Book Club with the podcast titled "This Happened," asking people to listen to a short podcast each day and discuss the podcasts at 2 p.m. each day on Zoom. Register for the discussions on Zoom here.

Tune into KOTO's Off the Record on May 19 6-7 p.m. for a special episode featuring SMRC staff.

There will also be a virtual movie watch party on May 27, 7 p.m. (movie TBD). To stay up to date on Sexual Assault Awareness Month, be sure to follow the Resource Center on Facebook and Instagram for the latest information. The SMRC has a toll-free 24-hour helpline at 1-844-816-3915.
