Disposable Mask Recycling Bins Now Available

Categories:

With the uptick in COVID-19 cases in our community, it is critical that safety protocols are being followed; particularly wearing a mask.

Mountain Village distributes about 50,000 disposables masks per month to fight the COVID-19 pandemic and keep our community safe. If you need a mask, KN95 masks are available to the community for free at Chair 4 or at Town Hall. As a reminder, masks are required to be worn by all gondola passengers per federal regulations. Masks are also available to all those loading onto the gondola. Do your part to keep everyone safe.

Recognizing that with increased mask distribution comes the potential for increased waste, the Town of Mountain Village has made disposable mask recycling bins available at all gondola station exits and at the Village Market. Help us keep our community clean by recycling these masks. Only disposable masks can be recycled in these bins. These include surgical, dust masks, KN95, and N95 masks. Please do not throw fabric masks or waste into these recycling bins as they will contaminate our recycling efforts. Additionally, do not throw disposable masks in your at-home recycling bin as they cannot be processed at local recycling centers.

The Town is using Terracycle's Zero Waste Boxes for the recycling effort. Once Terracycle receives a full box, it is quarantined for a minimum of 72 hours. The mask materials are then separated by type and processed into new forms. The recycled materials are used to make new products like decking, watering cans, and outdoor furniture. Thank you for your help in keeping our community safe and clean! Don’t forget to wear a mask and practice social distancing. For information on where to get tested, visit Public Health's website.
