May is Sexual Assault Awareness Month

The month of May is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and the San Miguel Resource Center has a series of events to commemorate this month to educate our community and fight stigmas around sexual assault.

The San Miguel Resource Center's (SMRC) mission is to eliminate domestic violence and sexual assault in our community through intervention services, prevention education and social change.

Art for Change – A High School Art Contest Supporting Sexual Assault Awareness Month
The San Miguel Resource Center and San Miguel County Law Enforcement have teamed up to sponsor an art competition for youth 14-18 years old in San Miguel County and the West End. Submissions should focus on raising awareness about sexual assault by transforming rape culture into a culture of consent, where all people feel safe and respected. Works can build off the following themes: challenging gender stereotypes, self image and standards of beauty; respect, healthy relationships, consent, and boundaries.

Submissions must not contain nudity, sexual acts, explicit language, or promotion of drugs, alcohol, or
weapons. Accepted mediums include:
- 2D Drawing, Painting, Photography, or Mixed Media up to 12”x18”
- Short stories, poetry or other written work up to 1500 words
- Original songs, short films, or videos up to 5 minutes long in MP3 or MP4 format
- Social Media or Advertising Campaign Portfolio with up to 5 digital images

Submissions are due May 21st and can be submitted using the QR code on the event flyer. The submissions will be judged and the entries displayed during Art Walk in the last week of May (more details TBD).

Ecstatic Journey Dance with Telluride Dance Collective – May 25th, 6-7 pm, Town Park
SMRC and Tthe Telluride Dance Collective are collaborating on an event for Sexual Assault Awareness Month to provide an opportunity for community outreach and awareness of the services provided by SMRC and TDC. The event will begin with opening remarks and speakers from SMRC and TDC. Afterward, have a facilitated "ecstatic journey dance" participatory experience.

SAAM Book Club with Wilkinson Public Library
In partnership with WPL, SMRC will be hosting a book club for the month of May on Missoula: Rape and the Justice System in a College Town by Jon Krakauer. Participants can register on the WPL website and pick up a free book from the library (spots are limited!). SMRC will host a Zoom book discussion on June 8th, 6-7 p.m.
