Mountain Village to reschedule lift ticket tax ballot question to November 4 election

Categories:

At its upcoming regular meeting on Wednesday, June 18, the Mountain Village Town Council will vote on a resolution to reschedule the election for ballot question 6: a proposed 5% excise tax on ski lift ticket taxes from the June 24, 2025, election to November 4, 2025.

“Rescheduling this ballot question will allow for Mountain Village to work with its regional partners on a larger community conversation regarding this important issue,” said Mayor Marti Prohaska.

The new election date for this ballot measure will provide additional time for the town to consult with affected stakeholders regarding the proposed tax and ballot language before the next ski season begins.

The ballot language was initially approved at the April 24, 2025, Mountain Village Town Council Meeting with the intent that future taxes collected would fund future operations and capital costs related to the gondola. The tax would be on ski lift ticket sales, exempting local season passes and local products.

Mountain Village introduced the lift ticket tax after Telluride Ski and Golf pulled out of a funding agreement with the San Miguel Authority for Regional Transportation (SMART) to contribute toward future operations and capital costs related to the gondola.

Ballots for the June 24 municipal election have already been printed and will be sent to registered voters this week, and any votes cast on ballot question 6 will not be recorded by the Mountain Village Clerk’s Office. The other five ballot questions will not be affected by this resolution.

November 4, 2025, is the next date authorized by the Colorado Constitution for the Town to hold a Taxpayer Bill of Rights (TABOR) election for a proposed new tax. The Town will share more information about this rescheduled ballot measure in the coming months.
