Telluride Ski Patrol postpones Howitzer training

Mandatory Howitzer training has been postponed. Stay tuned for details on when it is rescheduled.

The Telluride Ski Resort and the US Forest Service will conduct mandatory annual howitzer training Thursday, November 5 and Friday, November 6, 2020 in preparation for the 2020/2021 winter season.

Beginning at approximately 9 a.m. and continuing through each day, the public can expect to hear live firings of the avalanche mitigation cannon from the ski resort. Telluride Ski Patrol operates two howitzers to assist the Snow Safety Team in the mitigation of avalanche danger. Training is expected to end by 5 p.m.

All mountain access is closed during this training to the Prospect Basin, Prospect Ridge and Gold Hill Ridge. Please avoid travel on any trails or roads that lead into Prospect Basin, including the Prospect Trail and Prospect Loop as these trails enter the closed area. Multiple rounds of shots will be fired throughout the training and shrapnel from the howitzer can be deadly up to 600 meters from the site of impact.

In preparation for the 2020/2021 season, all public access to the Telluride Ski Resort is currently closed for uphill and downhill travel including skiing, snowboarding and sledding. Mountain Operations are underway including snowmaking, grooming, and final mountain preparations.
