Trick-or-Trash- recycling your candy wrappers this Halloween with Mountain Village

This Halloween, the Town of Mountain Village sustainability department is excited to participate in Trick-or-Trash - a candy wrapper recycling program.

The program is simple. Mountain Village will set out two boxes for collecting candy wrappers. One will be located in Town Hall and one at Village Court Apartments' Main Office. Simply bring your candy wrappers to one of these locations and drop them in the box! Once a box is full, Town staff will mail the box - using the UPS Carbon Neutral Shipment program - to Rubicon for recycling. The plastic from the wrappers is then recycled into plastic pellets for use in new items! Watch a video here on how the recycling process works.

Halloween is arguably one of the most celebrated holidays in the United States. Think about the costumes, number of doors you've knocked on, number of candies you've given out, and hours you've spent on the floor sorting candy and laying there in satisfied gluttony surrounded by wrappers. In the U.S. alone, over 600 million pounds of candy are purchased each year for Halloween. Normal practice is that once the candy goes in your mouth, the wrapper goes in the trash. Not this year.

Candy wrappers are unable to be recycled by our curbside recycling programs due to their small size and the mixed materials (e.g., plastic and aluminum) used to make candy wrappers. In 2022, Mountain Village has joined in Rubicon and the National Wildlife Federation's mission to end waste by participating in their Trick-or-Trash program.

The Town will receive a Certificate of Recycling with the number of wrappers the Mountain Village community diverted from landfills. Stay tuned for an update in November!
