Two electric vehicle charging stations open in Mountain Village

In the Town of Mountain Village's continued effort to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, we are excited to announce the opening of two new electric vehicle charging stations in Mountain Village.

Thanks to a general Charge Ahead Colorado Grant through the Colorado Energy Office, the Town now has a new EV charging station in Heritage Parking Garage and Meadows Parking Lot!

The Town's Climate Action Plan lays out strategies and supporting actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Mountain Village. With transportation as a source of emissions, one of these strategies is to "support equitable electric vehicle adoption" through the action of "increas[ing] the presence of electric vehicle chargers." In 2021, Mountain Village added an eight-post Tesla Supercharger station in the Gondola Parking Garage. This is in addition to the ChargePoint Level 2 electric vehicle (EV) charging station that was installed in May 2019.

Per our climate action plan, in 2019 gasoline vehicles were the source of 56% of our transportation greenhouse gas emissions and diesel vehicles were the source of 12%. Accessibility to EV charging stations supports the transition of these fossil-fuel-dependent vehicles to electric vehicles. Assuming 70% of the vehicles within the community are electric by 2050, we project an emissions reduction of 3% for our community. With increased awareness of and access to electric vehicle charging stations, we are one step closer to reducing emissions from transportation and being carbon neutral by 2050. Additionally, the Town's EV charging stations support the Regional Climate Action Plan for San Miguel and Ouray Counties and the State of Colorado's Greenhouse Gas Pollution Reduction Roadmap.

Installing electric vehicle charging stations in Mountain Village contributes to the development of an ever-growing network of charging stations in a travel corridor which includes Ouray, Montrose and Durango.

Why ChargePoint?

Through the Charge Ahead Colorado Grant, the Town of Mountain Village installed two ChargePoint Level 2 EV charging stations. ChargePoint is the "nation’s largest charging network with more than 68,000 charging spots" and its EV charging stations are included within the State of Colorado's Price Agreements. The EV charging station provides verbal assistance in three languages: English, Spanish, and French and offers free, 24/7 support. Additionally, the EV charging station installed in the Gondola Parking Garage in 2019 is a ChargePoint station. With this standardization, the EV charging stations are compatible and their data is accessible through one online portal.

How You Can Help Mountain Village Reduce Emissions from Transportation

Reducing your emissions does not have to be inconvenient or challenging! It can be as simple as choosing to ride the gondola or hopping on a SMART bus rather than jumping in your car. In the warmer months, take a walk or bike ride to get to where you need to go. If you are able to, consider replacing your personal vehicle with an EV when you replace your current car. If this is not an option, minimizing and combining car trips are also great ways to mitigate transportation emissions.

Thank you for doing your part to help us reach carbon neutrality by 2050!
