Update on Nordic trail grooming

Categories: Recreation

While the Mountain Village grooming crew is eager to lay some fresh corduroy for residents’ enjoyment, early season conditions have prevented the Town from opening the Nordic trails to the public.

The trails are groomed by Mountain Village recreation staff on Telluride Ski and Golf’s land, specifically the golf course. The Town’s crew works very closely with TSG staff to assure that grooming activities do not damage the golf course, thus preventing the use of the golf course during the summer. Damage to the Town’s grooming equipment is also an important consideration when assessing when grooming can begin.

Although recent storms have resulted in significant snowfall, the snowpack is still deceptively thin. This is particularly true on cart paths where portions of the trails are located. The wind has also scoured snow in some parts and deposited snow elsewhere throughout the area, making for extremely variable conditions and rendering equipment access questionable at some points on the trails.

In an effort to have the trails ready as soon as possible, all trails on the system map have been roller-packed at least once daily for the past two weeks with the exception of the segment between the Galloping Goose ski run and loop behind Fairway Four condos.

Thank you for your patience while we wait for more snow to fall with less wind.

We will post on Mountain Village social media accounts and on the Nordic Twitter account twitter.com/mvgroomer when we are able to groom the trails. We look forward to seeing you out there!
