Recycle More & Save Money
To advance our zero waste goals, our residential trash and recycling service provider offers lower rates for recycling versus trash. We encourage you to evaluate whether you could reduce the size of your trash container and increase the size of your recycle container to reduce waste, and save money. Remember, recycling glass, plastic 1-7, aluminum, paper and corrugated cardboard is mandatory in Mountain Village.
Residential Bruin Waste Management Trash Rates
Effective December 1, 2013 residents no longer receive monthly refuse and recycling bills from the Town of Mountain Village. Bills come directly from your service provider, Bruin Waste Management. Keep in mind that refuse billing can run two months in arrears so any additional services may be on the next billing cycle. All customer service calls are directed to the service provider, Bruin Waste Management. Bruin Waste Management adds a 10 percent administration charge to all trash and recycling fees. Residential Trash & Recycling Rules & Guidelines
We can’t stress enough how important it is that you follow our residential trash and recycling rules and guidelines, which can be found in our Municipal Code. We have highlighted some of them for your convenience, which should help alleviate wildlife problems and neighborhood unsightliness while ensuring we recycle more items and send less to the landfills. If for any reason you are unable to comply with the following, contact us so we may address any issues.
- Place your locked trash container and recycle container out early Monday morning, not the night before, to keep the streets tidy and prevent wildlife from entering.
- Return your trash and recycle containers to a secure location after pickup. Do not leave the containers out overnight or for an extended period of time.
- Contact your service provider to make an adjustment to the size of your trash or recycle container. Remember, recycling costs less than trash and helps the environment. Increase the size of your recycle container and decrease the size of your trash container, when possible.

As a friendly reminder, if you are a Bruin Waste customer you no longer have to separate your paper products from all other items. In other words, all recyclables can be comingled making recycling easier. Waste Management customers need to separate paper products from all other items.

The Electronic Recycling Jobs Act went into effect July 1, 2013, and it prohibits the disposal of waste electronic devices (e-waste). E-waste includes televisions, computer monitors, printers, fax machines, among other devices. The most environmentally responsible option is recycling these types of items through a community collection event. For a complete list of devices and additional information you will want to review the Electronic Waste Disposal Ban information sheet.
Electronic items other than televisions and computer monitors may be taken to local salvage shops where you may receive money back for these items. Two companies on the Western Slop include Recla Metals in Montrose and Belt Salvage in Cortez. Bruin Waste Management will also pick up electronics for an additional fee.
Community-Wide Cleanup Events
For household and office electronics and hazardous wastes including paints, oils, solvents, batteries, etc., regional events are held twice annually in May and October, and include a nominal fee; household hazardous wastes are typically collected at the May spring cleanup.
