Professional Background/Occupation:
Prior to retiring at the end of 2018, I was the CEO of Thrivent Financial. Thrivent is a Fortune 300 not-for-profit financial services company.
After retirement, I served as the interim CEO of the Wilder Foundation in St. Paul, MN. Wilder is one of the oldest community foundations in the country.
1998 - 2003 I was elected to serve as the Chief Administrative Officer for the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, a large Christian denomination. This role reported to the Board of Directors.
1992 - 1998. I served as the CFO then CEO of Diversified Pharmaceutical Services. DPS was one of the first pharmacy benefit managers serving managed care organizations.
1986 - 1992 I served as a Financial Underwriter for United Healthcare.
1982 - 1986. I worked in the Actuarial Services Department at MN Mutual.
Length of Time as Town Resident:
We moved to Mountain Village full time in 2020, and we had a fractional ownership at the FKL since 2002.
Previous Political Experience/Specific Qualifications:
Currently I serve on two not-for-profit Boards
- Uncompahgre Medical Center in Norwood. (Federally Qualified Health Center)
- Presbyterian Homes and Services in St. Paul, MN. (Affordable Senior Housing and Health Care)
I served on the Habitat for Humanity International board for 9 years ending as chair, until I was termed off because of term limits.
When we lived in Minnesota
- I served on the Governor’s Task Force on Affordable Housing
- I served as Chair of the Itasca Project. The Itasca Project is a coalition of leaders from the public/private/n-f-p sectors that help prioritize resource and initiatives to for the public good in the Twin Cities.
I have also served on many other boards and task forces in education and other social services.
Reasons You Would Like to Serve:
I believe my experience in leadership, finance, affordable housing and health care will serve our community well as we look to the future. I have served on enough public task forces and boards to understand the process and I have the patience required to build consensus to serve the public good.
Other Information You Want to Include:
I’m married to Susan Hewitt. We have been married for 40 years. We have two married children and two grandchildren, who all love to visit our home in Mountain Village. I am an Elder at the Alpine Chapel in Telluride. I have served, and plan to continue to serve as a mentor to people going through challenging life circumstances. In the Twin Cities I served as a mentor at UpWorks for men getting their first job after prison or drug treatment.
